GVEC members helping their communities thrive

New Berlin, Lifegate among Power Up grant recipients

(Guadalupe County) — A pair of GVEC members are getting a helping hand thanks to the Power Up community grant program.

The program continues to grow with 10 more nonprofit organizations receiving nearly $171,000 in grants.

GVEC officials say these grants, which provide funding assistance for community projects, are made possible by the generous  donations of GVEC members supporting the charitable Power Up program.

In the most recent round of its distributions, Lifegate Christian School here in Seguin has received a Power Up grant for $14,763:

GVEC officials say the Lifegate Christian School’s main gymnasium is used for the school’s normal activities as well as community events. The facility has been used for sports tournaments, sports camps, youth and church events and for a volunteer fire department fundraiser dinner. The school will use the grant funds to improve the ventilation system of the main gym. They say the purchase and installation of two industrial ceiling fans will also greatly improve the comfort level for the hundreds of visitors who utilize the facility.

The City of New Berlin has also received a Power Up grant for $20,000.

The City of New Berlin’s city park will be receiving an upgrade with the addition of an compacted decomposed granite walking path. The walking path was requested by the community members to enhance the current amenities of a children’s playscape, benches, basketball court and covered pavilion. GVEC officials say the new walking path will allow parents the opportunity to exercise while their children play nearby as well as be a safe and inviting space for anyone looking for a place to walk.

Other Power Up grants awarded during this cycle include: $18,283 to Ander-Weser Volunteer Fire Department, Goliad, for bunker gear washer/extractor and drying cabinet; $2,183.98 to Goliad County EMS, Goliad, for pediatric transport restraint system; $20,000 to Gonzales County Veterans Memorial Association, Gonzales, for a veterans memorial; $20,000 to Meyersville ISD, Meyersville, for exterior LED lighting of the Meyersville school campus; $20,000 to Nixon Methodist Church, Nixon, for expansion of God’s Storehouse Food Pantry; $19,461 to Thompsonville Cemetery Association, Waelder, for community center improvements; $20,000 to Yoakum ISD, Yoakum, for Yoakum high school beautification project; and $16,236.84 to York Creek VFD, Staples, for firefighter personal protective equipment.

Since the first grant distribution in 2012, more than $3.8 million in grants have helped fund 239 community projects benefiting GVEC members and citizens in communities GVEC serves. These projects range from the purchase of life-saving equipment for first responders and medical facilities to the renovation of local museums, parks, historic places and community meeting spaces.

The next application deadline for the Power Up community grant program is Aug. 15, 2024. For program qualifications and an application, visit gvec.org, or call 830.857.3424. Grant applications are also available at GVEC’s five area offices.
