(Seguin) — In front of family, friends, coaches and teammates, Seguin High School senior Kayden Holz signed on the dotted line to continue his academic and athletic career at Our Lady of the Lake University at a signing ceremony on Tuesday at the high school.

Holz will take his baseball talents just to the west of Seguin at the private Catholic school in San Antonio. The Matador shortstop, who was named the 2024 team MVP at the team’s banquet this week, made his commitment to the Saints official on Tuesday morning.

A number of college offers rolled in for Holz this season and he says the many conversations he had with OLLU were a big factor for him in choosing the Saints.

“Everyone else was still talking to me but the way (OLLU) were talking to me over time, just constantly making sure and checking on me meant a lot to me,” Holz said. “So, it really leaned me forward to them in making this decision.”

Seguin head baseball coach Mike Gonzales put Holz in the leadoff spot for the district season and the senior responded with some big late-game hits for his coach. Holz tripled in the winning run against Kerrville-Tivy in a walk-off win against the Antlers in March. He scored a walk-off run after doubling with the bases loaded to drive in three and tie the Mats’ game against San Antonio Veterans Memorial in April.

Holz also competed on the Seguin 4X100 track relay team. He says he’ll never forget the memories he made with his teammates on the baseball and track team. Holz teamed with Nik Henry, Ocean Moreno and Elliot Weaver to win the bronze medal at the UIL Class 5A state track & field meet in Austin earlier this month. He says it was a rush to be in the moment at the state meet.

“What can I say, adrenaline. It was just rushing through me. It was just all in a blink of an eye and it was a crazy moment and something I will never take for granted.”

Holz plans to study business at Our Lady of the Lake. He hopes to use his entrepreneurial education in his future after graduating from college.

The Our Lady of the Lake baseball program is led by head coach Matt Piker. The Saints had a 28-24 overall record in the 2024 season.
