Seguin’s growth backed by numbers

Seguin's growth backed by numbers

Latest census reports surge in Seguin’s population

(Seguin) – The latest U.S. Census numbers are out and the city of Seguin’s population is now estimated at 36,013. That is a 7.79 percent increase from July 1, 2022. City leaders say this significant increase has positioned Seguin among the fastest growing cities not only in the area but in the country.

Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen says this impressive growth has positioned Seguin among the 25 Fastest-Growing Cities in the United States (on a percentage basis) for communities with populations of 20,000 or more in 2022. Seguin ranks #21 on this list, out of 1,875 communities nationwide, underscoring Seguin’s dynamic expansion and appeal.

“Where in the 2020 Census, we were at almost 29,000 people and we know that was an under count even if we added to that, that is just an amazing amount of increase. And you know, we are working on that. We are accommodating that. Housing is do that. Our schools are preparing themselves for that. The more people here, the more things of quality of life that we can have, and we can support and that’s what we want to do.

We are not going to be 100,000. We are not going to be 200,000. But we are going to grow a little bit more. We are one of the fastest growing cities in the state of Texas percent wise and so that is pretty darn exciting,” said Dodgen.

Moreover, city officials say Seguin has distinguished itself as the fastest-growing community (on a percentage basis) within the San Antonio metro area over the past year. Within the broader San Antonio/Austin mega region, Seguin is ranked as the 3rd fastest-growing community, trailing only behind Kyle and Georgetown.

Dodgen says the city’s inclusion in these rankings is a testament to the vibrant growth and development that Seguin is experiencing. She says this milestone reflects the community’s resilience, attractiveness, and the successful efforts of everyone who has contributed to making Seguin a great place to live, work, and thrive.

“What I say is, I think, it is better to be part of the solution and to look at things positively. So, what can we gain from this? How can we use that to improve us and to put us to the next level? How can we use that to get the things we want? I look at it that way. That it is just another avenue and we take care of it and manage it smartly which I think that we are doing – not all may agree with that – but I think we are at least trying hard to do it that way and so it can give us the things that we want and the things that people want here. I was at Barnes (Middle School) doing a class and they told me they want a Cane’s, a Target, an HEB and a Chick-fil-A. We have to have people to have those things,” said Dodgen.

City officials say the city’s rapid growth is further evidenced by the robust residential development underway.

Seguin currently has 27 residential subdivisions under construction and over 16,000 dwelling units in its development pipeline. Since 2020, nearly 4,000 new residential building permits have been issued, reflecting a significant demand for housing.

“In addition to residential growth, Seguin continues to attract a diverse array of businesses. Notable manufacturers such as Maruichi and Premium Waters are set to commence operations later this year, adding to the city’s economic vitality. In addition, retailers like Ross, Marshalls, Boot Barn, Discount Tire, and Harbor Freight Tools have expanded into the region over the past 12-18 months, with more substantial retail growth expected in the immediate future.
