(Seguin) — There’s nothing like a little comedy rock musical to help wrap up the 2023-2024 school year for the Seguin High School Matador Theatre group. The theatre department, all weekend long, will present the cult classic Little Shop of Horrors at the SHS Performing Arts Center.

Theatre Director Lydia Robles says this, no doubt, was the year that the high school had the right group of actors to pull off this show. She says it took certain voices, talents and abled bodies to maneuver the puppets that are at the forefront of this musical.

“Students have really enjoyed putting it together and they have been working really hard but it was also a good piece in that it is challenging our students. It’s not a simple show or an easy show to do. So, they’ve stepped up to the challenge and they are working really hard to put our final pieces together,” said Robles.

Robles says this classic from the 1960s has remained a fan favorite and promises to keep the audience entertained from start to finish.

“It is a musical about an alien plant that a Skid Row florist takes in and he finds out that this plant actually feeds off of blood and so, our conflict centers around this nerdy lovable Seymour Krelborn and he is in love with a knockout dynamite looking girl but there are bad things that Seymour has to do that challenges him and he starts to question what he is doing is correct or what he is doing is what he should be doing,” said Robles.

The show is designed with high energy throughout. Robles says the show features the sounds of the 60s and a collage  of other funky music.

“It’s got like the doo-wop sound and the groove sound, lots of up beat fun characters going on. It’s an experience. Little Shop of Horror is a real treat and it’s one of those shows that if you know it, chances are that you’ve memorized the songs. You know it well,” said Robles.

Showtimes are Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. A Sunday matinee is also scheduled for 3 p.m. A senior ceremony, presenting the work and commitment of 10 graduating seniors, will also be held prior to showtime at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets online are $12 for adults and $8 for students. Only cash tickets will be sold at the door. Those tickets increase to $15 for adults and $10 for students.
