(Seguin) — The defending Texas Collegiate League champion Seguin River Monsters will open their third season at the end of the month.
The River Monsters will welcome the Victoria Generals to Smokey Joe Williams Field for a two-game series starting with their home opener on Thursday, May 30th.
Seguin beat the Brazos Valley Bombers in the TCL Championship Game last August. Seguin’s opening series with Victoria will be a rematch of the TCL semifinals won by the Monsters last season, two games to one.
The Texas Collegiate League has six teams. In addition to the River Monsters, Generals and Bombers, the Lake Charles Gumbeaux Gators, Baton Rouge Rougarou and Acadiana Cane Cutters compete in the summer league.
Tony Perez is back to lead the River Monsters in his second year as the team’s skipper. Perez is from Midland, Texas. He played collegiate ball at New Mexico Junior College and Arkansas-Little Rock before finishing his college career at Lubbock Christian University.
Perez will have a Lubbock Christian pitcher who has local ties on his staff. 2023 Navarro High School grad Bryce Nall, who recently finished his freshman season in Lubbock, will pitch for the Monsters this summer.
On May 31st, the River Monsters will host the Battle of the Badges Softball Game between the Seguin and New Braunfels Police Departments. The game will be held prior to the River Monsters/Generals game at 6 p.m. Admission to the Friday, May 31st game is free.
The TCL season will be divided into two 24 game halves with the first half concluding on June 26th. The season concludes on July 28th and the playoffs will start immediately after the regular season concludes. The champion will be crowned on August 3rd.
Seguin will host the TCL All-Star Game on July 3rd at Smokey Joe. The game will feature a home run derby and a post game fireworks show.
