(Seguin) — Seguin and communities from all over the United States and Mexico will be hosting celebrations in honor of Cinco de Mayo. Cinco de Mayo celebrates the 1862 triumph of Mexican forces in the Battle of Puebla. The outnumbered Mexicans were led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, who defeated a significantly larger French force. Zaragoza was born in what is now Goliad, Texas to Miguel G. Zaragoza and María de Jesús Seguín, who was cousins with our very own Juan Seguin.
The 15th Annual Cinco de Mayo Pachanga hosted by the LULAC Council 682 highlights the food, dance, music, performance art and cultural references of the Mexican-American experience. From performers to games and activities, the organization celebrates our shared artistic heritage with the community and expose the next generation to their cultural inheritance.
The weekend event has a great line up of entertainment starting on Friday at 7:00 p.m. through midnight with Gacho Sol, Clint Taft, and Conjunto Cats. Music will continue on Saturday starting at 7 p.m. through midnight with Lucha Libre, Undercover Killers, Wheels of Steel, and Tiffany Dawn.
Along with the live music, vendors and more will be available from 5 p.m. to midnight on Friday and from noon to midnight on Saturday.
Visitors can shop the local vendors and taste the delicious festival food available in Central Park. On Saturday, three new events have been added to the fun; the events include live Lucha Libre at 1:30, a concha eating competition and a chancla throwing competition.
“We encourage the community to come out and support what we hope will be the largest and best Cinco de Mayo Pachanga we’ve ever hosted, especially because it’s all about raising money to fund scholarships distributed by LULAC Council 682” said Felix Moreno, President of LULAC Council 682.
“Most people celebrate Cinco de Mayo without realizing that Texas, and especially Seguin have a connection to the historic Battle of Puebla, and over time we hope to change that,” said Eli Guerrero, vice president of LULAC Council 682.
