Playoff implications on the line as Seguin Matadors host Boerne-Champion tonight on KWED

(Seguin) — The Seguin Matadors host Boerne-Champion tonight for Senior Night at Smokey Joe Williams Field.

Tonight is the first of two games this week between the Matadors and Chargers. Tonight’s game will be the final regular season home game for Seguin’s seniors. Matador head coach Mike Gonzales says Kayden Holz and his group of seniors have been big contributors to the team’s success this season.

“Kayden has had a great year. He’s put us in good positions to win. Holt Haas, Cooper Neumann, Creed Weaver, Rayjen Tovar, Seth Cevallos and all the rest of the seniors have done a great job. Landon Trost has been one of our best defenders in center field,” Gonzales said. “We’re proud of them. It’s a great group, smart, great kids. They handle business on and off the field. It’s been a pleasure coaching them. I’m glad to have been a part of their journey. And I’m glad for them to have had a little bit of success this year and hopefully we get to keep that success going.”

There are lots of District 26-5A playoff implications on the line tonight. The Chargers are looking to take the district championship this week after they swept Smithson Valley last week to move into a tie for first with the Rangers.

There are four teams vying for the fourth and final playoff spot in the district. Seguin is one of those teams along with New Braunfels Canyon and San Antonio Wagner, who are playing each other this week. Kerrville-Tivy is the other team. They are playing last place San Antonio Veterans Memorial this week.

Seguin is in fouth place right now with a 6-6 district record. Canyon is right behind them at 5-7 in fifth. And the Antlers and T’birds are tied for sixth at 4-8.

The magic number for the Matadors to clinch a playoff spot is two. They can clinch a postseason spot tonight if they win and Canyon loses.

We will visit more with Seguin coach Mike Gonzales tonight during our Matador baseball pregame coverage which starts at 6:45 p.m. on KWED. We’ll have first pitch between Boerne-Champion and Seguin at 7 p.m. on AM 1580 and streaming at SeguinToday.com.

(San Antonio) — The Navarro Panthers will play their final district game of the season today at San Antonio Memorial.

The Panthers will play in the Bi-District round next week. Navarro will be the second seed out of District 28-4A.

First pitch between Navarro and Memorial takes place at 7 O’clock tonight at Memorial High School.
