Habitat, Lions and Water (oh my!) all on this week’s Saturday Topic

Seguin, TX, USA / Seguin Today
Habitat, Lions and Water (oh my!) all on this week's Saturday Topic

(Seguin) — We have an expanded edition of the Saturday Topic program this week on KWED. Three segments will require us to start the program earlier this week.

We begin with a look at the work of Habitat for Humanity. The local chapter continues to build affordable and decent housing for hard working families in Seguin. Habitat is also preparing for a big community event, that will allow everyone to get involved in their mission to build a better community.

Madeline Zwicke, the executive director for the Guadalupe Valley Chapter of Habitat for Humanity and Taylor Judkin, the Assistant Vice President for Development and Communications for habitat’s affiliates in San Antonio and Seguin, will both join host Darren Dunn on the program. Zwicke says June 22 is a day that you need to circle on your calendar and bring the entire family out to the Build For Better Bash at TLU.

“So, it’s a family fun event. We’re going to have a bounce house there, a DJ, we’re doing a remote with KWED (and) we’re going to have a dunk tank…lots of fun there, (and) we’re going to have food. Everybody that purchases a ticket will also get a t-shirt that says Build For Better across the front to be able to represent habitat in Seguin,” said Zwicke.

Zwicke says the most important part of the day will be an opportunity for the entire community to help literally build the walls for habitat’s next home.

“We’re going to be building a set of wall panels for our next home buyer here in Seguin. So, we’ll have eight stations laid out in the TLU parking lot. We’re going to be swinging a hammer and nailing (boards) at each station. We’re going to have upwards of 200 volunteers out there,” said Zwicke.

Part two of our Saturday Topic program features a look at the Seguin Noon Lions Club’s Spring Fling. Lions Club members Bill Klingemann and Steve Peth will join us on the Saturday Topic for a look at this year’s event. Klingemann says this is always a popular event and it’s coming up again on Thursday, April 25 at the Silver Center on East Court Street.

“Well, it’s something that we’ve been putting on, our Lions Club, in various incantations since back in the 1940s. After the COVID disaster years, we basically have turned it into a to-go pork steak dinner, along with our traditional raffle. And the thing that makes it so successful is that we’re offering Next Door Catering — Troy and Nancy Brown’s pork steaks. And if you’ve ever had those, well, you know how good they are and you’re going to come back for them. So, we always put this on, and the tickets almost seem to sell themselves,” said Klingemann.

The final segment is an encore presentation of a recent Saturday Topic program, in which we take a look at the May 4 election day for the Springs Hill Water Supply Corporation. Springs Hill is asking its members to allow it to convert from a water corporation to a special utility district or SUD. Springs Hill General Manager Mike Andrews will join us to discuss why this move is important to the future of Springs Hill.

“As I tell people, I’m sitting at the kids table waiting for whatever scraps are leftover water wise. And so, one of the big reasons we wanted to become a SUD is that suddenly we get to go to the adults table and I’m on equal footing with the city of Santa Clara or with the Green Valley SUD, or with city of Seguin. So, that gives me the chance to be able to buy water,” said Andrews.

It’s a jam-packed Saturday Topic this week. That’s means we will have an earlier start time for the program. The Saturday Topic will get started at 7:30 Saturday morning here on AM 1580 KWED and live online at seguintoday.com. Again, please note the 7:30 earlier start time for the program.
