UPDATE: Seguin Matadors on KWED today with NEW TIME

Seguin senior Kayden Holz (#3)

(Seguin) – High school baseball is on the air on KWED today from Smokey Joe Williams Field as the Seguin Matadors host San Antonio Veterans Memorial.

The Matadors are just a game back of New Braunfels Canyon for the fourth and final playoff spot in District 26-5A. The Mats and Cougars will meet next week but first up it’s the Patriots for Seguin.

The Matadors are 3-5 in district with six games left in the district season. Seguin has one more win in district than they had last year and it’s thanks in large part to their young starting pitchers. Sophomore Corey Dailey and freshman Griffin Welfel have come up big for the Matador staff and Seguin head coach Mike Gonzales says his young arms provide a solid foundation with the veteran players on the team.

“They’ve been doing a great job this year. There’s no moment too big for them,” Gonzales said. “Corey gets that varsity experience in basketball and football, so there’s never a moment too big for him. He handles himself well.

“Griffin has been having an awesome year, a historical year for Seguin. As far as I can remember, I haven’t seen a freshman step up and have such a big role as he has for us. So, it’s good to have that youth on our side.”

UPDATE: Due to the threat of inclement weather, first pitch of tonight’s game has been changed to 5 p.m.

KWED news will air at 4 p.m. this afternoon and we’ll have our Matador baseball pregame coverage at 4:45 p.m. on AM 1580 and streaming at SeguinToday.com.
