10 area high school student-athletes to compete at state powerlifting championship

(Abilene) — Eight Navarro Panthers will be among 10 area high school student-athletes competing at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association boys state championship to be held on Friday and Saturday.

Nick Aranda, Evan Rodriguez, Ashton Evans, Gabe Rangel, Korbin Benes, Nick Schwarzlose, Matt Richardson and Mack Berry will represent Navarro High School at the state meet. Seguin High School will be represented by James Medrano and Justin DeHoyos will represent Marion High School.

The Navarro team took the Region 4 Division 2 Championship on Thursday, March 7th at Colmesneil High School.

Aranda, competing in the 114-pound weight class, lifted a total of 920 pounds. Rodriguez lifted a total of 970 pounds in the 123-pound weight class. Evans competed in the 132-pound weight class and lifted a total of 1115 pounds. Rangel and Benes were competitors in the 148-pound weight class. Rangel’s total was 1345 pounds while Benes lifted a total of 1200 pounds. In the 181-pound weight class, Schwarzlose lifted a total of 1365 pounds. And in the 198-pound class, Richardson lifted a total of 1425 pounds while Berry totaled 1400 pounds.

Marion’s DeHoyos qualified for the state meet on March 8th at Colmesneil High School. At the Division 3 regional, DeHoyos lifted a total of 1610 pounds in the 242-pound weight class.

Seguin’s Medrano punched his ticket to the state meet on March 9th at Joshua High School at the Division 1 regional. Medrano lifted a total of 1220 pounds in the 114-pound weight class. Medrano’s total was a regional record and nearly 200 more pounds than the second place competitor.

The boys state meet is being held at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.
