(Seguin) — The Marion Bulldogs are still alive in the UIL Class 3A playoffs and tonight they’ll play in the Region IV quarterfinals in Seguin. The Bulldogs will take on the Poth Pirates this evening at Goldie Harris Gym.

Marion made 13 three-pointers as a team in an 81-72 victory over Crystal City in the Area round last Friday in Devine. Senior Richie Rayos had four three-pointers in the win finishing with 27 points. Junior Braeden Fleming had five treys and 23 points for the Bulldogs. Sophomore Travis Randle drilled three baskets from behind the arc in the Area round victory.

Last Tuesday, Marion held off Yoakum, 51-49 in the Bi-District playoffs at Weimar High School. Both Rayos and Fleming poured in 15 points apiece in the first-round win.

Marion was the third-place team out of District 26-3A during the regular season. The Bulldogs have a 23-9 record on the season.

The Pirates were the champions of District 27-3A. Poth beat Rice Consolidated, 65-49 in the Area playoffs last Friday. Poth took down Hondo, 68-41, one week ago in the Bi-District round.

The Pirates and the Bulldogs met in the non-district season over two months ago. Poth beat Marion, 49-38 back on December 9th in the championship game of the Comfort Tournament. The Pirates have a 20-5 overall record on the season.

The winner of tonight’s playoff will move on to the regional semis to face either Kingsville Santa Gertrudis Academy or Goliad. The UIL regional semifinals will take place later this week.

Tonight’s Class 3A Region IV quarterfinal playoff will tip off at 6 p.m. and we’ll have the game for you on KWED. Our Bulldog pregame will start at around 5:55 this evening from Goldie Harris on AM 1580 and streaming at SeguinToday.com.
