(Weimar) — The Marion Bulldogs will meet the Yoakum Bulldogs in the Class 3A Bi-District round in Weimar.
Marion was the third-place team from District 26-3A. Yoakum finished second in District 25-3A. The teams met in the non-district season with Marion taking down Yoakum, 47-28 at the Marion Basketball Tournament back in December.
Richie Rayos is the Marion Bulldogs’ leading scorer. The senior pours in around 15 points per game. Junior Braeden Fleming is second in scoring for Marion at 13.9 points per contest. The Marion Bulldogs are led by longtime head basketball coach Jon Allen.
Both teams have 20 wins on the season. Yoakum comes in with a 20-13 record while Marion went 21-9 during the regular season. Marion went 6-4 in district. The Cole Cougars went 10-0 in winning District 26-3A this season. Cole is ranked 3rd in the latest Class 3A state coaches’ poll.
Yoakum was 11-3 in District 25-3A. The Yoakum Bulldogs finished two games behind the district champion Edna Cowboys.
Tonight’s winner will move to the Area Round and face the winner of the Jourdanton/Crystal City Bi-District playoff. The Javelinas were the champions of District 28-3A. The Indians finished fourth in District 27-3A. The Bi-District game between Crystal City and Jourdanton takes place at 6 p.m. tonight at Natalia High School.
