(Seguin) — The Seguin Lady Matadors and Marion Lady Bulldogs picked up victories in their respective openers at the Seguin Softball Tournament at the Fields at Huber Ranch on Thursday.
The Lady Mats used the long ball early and great pitching throughout to take down San Antonio Highlands, 3-0. D’Yanna Priestly and Erin Johnston went yard in the bottom of the first to give Seguin all the runs they would need.
Priestly launched a solo-shot with one out to get the Lady Mats on the board. And then following a single by Summer Flores, Johnston jacked one to left that bounced off the top of the wall and out for a two-run homer and a three-run lead for Seguin. Johnston continued her torrid start to the season. The sophomore went 4-for-4 from the plate on Tuesday in the Lady Mats’ 11-3 opening day victory over Lockhart.
The three runs would be plenty for Seguin pitchers Madyson Schultze and Kendall Hurt. The two combined to go five scoreless innings in the shutout victory.
The Marion Lady Bulldogs won a wild affair with IDEA South Flores Charter School, holding off the Lady Owls 9-8.
Marion got on the board in the top of the first, thanks to three straight triples by Lailah Hernandez, Gianna Ricarte and Cambry Dojahn. All three would score to stake the Lady Bulldogs to a 3-0 lead.
With the game tied 6-6 game in the top of the fourth, Dojahn doubled to bring home Ricarte who singled to start the inning. Kira Jones followed with a base hit to score Dojahn. And then Carlie Alvarado singled to score Jones to give Marion a 9-6 lead. Ricarte finished the game 3-for-3.
Alyson Robles went four innings in the circle to get the victory. The freshman got a ground-out to third to end the game with the tying and winning runs on base in the bottom of the fourth.
Play continues at the Seguin Softball Tournament through Saturday.
