High school basketball roundup: Lady Matadors rally in fourth quarter for district win while Marion teams win two on Tuesday

Seguin girls basketball coach Veronda Kendall diagrams a play for her team.

(San Antonio) — The Seguin Lady Matadors made it a District 26-5A season sweep over Veterans Memorial with a 46-43 come-from-behind victory over the Lady Patriots in San Antonio.

Down by 10 going into the final quarter, the Lady Mats outscored the Lady Patriots 23-10 in the fourth to rally for the win. Desiree Zuniga led the Seguin attack with 11 points on the night. Britlyn Walls and Rebeka Wilke each had nine points.

The Lady Mats will next host the Canyon Cougarettes on Friday night for Parent/Senior Night. We’ll have that game for you on KWED.

(Seguin) — Meanwhile over in Seguin, the Class 5A second-ranked Patriots took down the Matadors 70-58.

The Seguin boys also had a big fourth quarter, exploding for 30 points despite coming up short. John Jackson dropped in 24 points to lead three Matadors in double figures. Cameron Juarez-Bruns tallied 13 and Corey Dailey added 11.

The Mats, who are still one game out of the final district playoff spot with four games left, will be in New Braunfels on Friday night to take on the Canyon Cougars.

(Geronimo) — In Geronimo last night, the Navarro Runnin’ Lady Panthers fell to Class 4A 10th-ranked Boerne 55-22 in District 27-4A play.

The Lady Greyhounds drained seven three-point shots in the first half and used a suffering zone defense to get out to a big halftime lead and never looked back.

“They’re so tall and long. They run that 2-3 match-up zone, and it just made it hard for us,” Navarro head coach Darrell Harborth said of Boerne following the game. “Offensively, they shoot the ball from eight steps behind the three-point line. They’re number 10 and deserved of that.

“We’re gonna get back to work and get ready for Wimberley on Friday and see where we end up for the playoff run.”

Tegan Harborth led the Lady Panthers with 10 points. Navarro is in third place in the district at 7-4. The Lady Panthers will wrap district play at Wimberley on Friday.

(Boerne) — On the boys’ side, the first-place Boerne Greyhounds flew past the Navarro Panthers 89-41 in Boerne. The Panthers will host Wimberley on Friday.

(Marion) — In Marion, the Bulldog girls and boys earned a District 26-3A sweep over Nixon-Smiley on Tuesday night.

The Lady Bulldogs moved one game in front of the Lady Mustangs for third place in the district with a 48-32 victory. The win gave Marion a district season sweep over Nixon-Smiley. The Lady Bulldogs can lock down the third playoff seed out of the district with one more win in their final two games.

And the Bulldog boys also earned a season sweep over Nixon-Smiley with a 66-35 rout of the Mustangs Tuesday night.

Braeden Fleming had a game-high 29 points as the Bulldogs scored 48 points in the first half to jump out to a 27-point lead at the break.

Both Bulldog teams will be at Great Hearts Northern Oaks for another girls/boys district double header on Friday.
