Seguin ISD facility seeks new name

(Seguin) — Nominations are being sought to rename a Seguin ISD facility.

The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees is accepting nominations to rename the Mercer-Blumberg Learning Center portion of the district’s administration building.

Presently, two Seguin ISD facilities are named Mercer-Blumberg. Sean Hoffmann, the chief communications officer for the Seguin ISD, says one is the former campus facility in the administration building, located at 1221 E. Kingsbury St., while the current campus facility that serves students, located at 118 N. Bowie St., is officially named Mercer-Blumberg Learning Center at Saegert.

“As it is right now, we do have two facilities named after Mercer Blumberg. We’ve got the MBLC at Saegert. That facility, I think we probably all agree we want to keep that name. However, this facility is also named Mercer Blumberg Learning Center as it was vacated and we are hoping that we might be able to get community input and possibly make a change,” said Hoffmann.

He says the Mercer-Blumberg Learning Center at the administration building is now meeting space, offices and storage. He says officials are hoping the community will step forward to submit name suggestions for this facility.

“This would allow district staff to begin the process to inform the community that the district is accepting nominations and suggestions for a name. There is a criteria and a process that is outlined. We would follow this and share this information with the community to let them know that we are opening up this process for about 30 days. This is the criteria that can be considered for this facility to be renamed and get the word out,” said Hoffmann.

The school facility may be named for any person, living or deceased, provided that the name has a special significance or the person has made an outstanding contribution to the school or the district.

Staff, students and the community have until 4:30 p.m. Feb. 22, 2024  to email their nomination to sisd@seguin.k12.tx.us or send  via mail to Seguin ISD Central Office, 1221 E. Kingsbury St., Seguin, TX 78155. Nominations will also be accepted in person.

Nominations must be in writing and include a description of the nominee’s contributions, why they are important or any pertinent history of why should be considered. No more than three pages of supporting documentation shall be included for each nomination.

Trustees will evaluate the person’s contribution in the field of education, extraordinary contributions to the civic life of the community, state or nation. Also considered are recommendations by an individual, family or organization who has donated property or funds for the construction of an educational facility in Seguin ISD.

Following the Feb. 22 deadline, trustees will review nominations for consideration and possible approval at a future school board meeting.
