(San Antonio) — Christmas is over and that means it’s time to start thinking about those New Year’s Resolutions. Weight loss is a popular one, and it comes at a time when prescriptions for a popular medicine called Ozempic are going through the roof.
“They do go to your brain and they tell your brain — ‘okay, I’m not that hungry (and) I don’t need to be eating this much.’ So, it suppresses your appetite. It also will go to your stomach and it will slow down they way your stomach processes the food,” said Dr. Maria Escobar-Vasco at the University of Texas Health System in San Antonio.
She says the drugs are not for everybody. The medication is meant for people who are dangerously obese, not those who want to look good in a swimsuit. The recent popularity of drugs, like Ozempic, has come with challenges. It’s also used by diabetics, and has become harder for them to get.
