(Converse) — The Wagner Thunderbirds showed why they are one of the top teams in District 12-5A with a dominating 41-7 win over the Seguin Matadors at Rutledge Stadium in Converse on Thursday night.
After forcing a three-and-out by the Matadors on their first possession of the game, Wagner scored on their first play from scrimmage. Slot-back Juan’yae Taylor took a pitch from the Thunderbird wishbone attack and raced 45 yards down the right sideline to the end-zone to get Wagner on the board first.
The Matadors would punt again on their next possession and Wagner would make the score 14-0 capping off their next drive with a four-yard touchdown run by William Reynolds.
Seguin punter Landon Trost would pin the Thunderbirds deep inside the five-yard line and the Matador defense would stop Wagner on a three-and-out and start their next drive in Thunderbird territory, leading to a Devin Hall 23-yard touchdown run to get the Mats on the board to pull Seguin within 14-7 but that’s as close as the Mats would get on the evening. Wagner would score two more touchdowns before the end of the half and tack on two more in the second half.
Wagner had 419 total yards of offense all on the ground while limiting Seguin to just 175. Matador running back John Jackson had 113 yards rushing on 19 carries, extending his program single season total to 1713 yards.
Seguin falls to 3-3 and fifth place in district, a half-game behind Boerne-Champion and New Braunfels Canyon. Wagner is now 5-1. The T-birds trail 5-0 Smithson Valley by a half-game.
The Matadors will host Smithson Valley next Friday at Matador Stadium for Senior Night. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and we’ll have the game for you on KWED.
