Matadors fall out of first in district with loss at Boerne Champion

(Boerne) — The Boerne Champion Chargers raced off to a fast start and kept the foot on the gas early in a 52-19 rout over the Seguin Matadors on Friday night at Boerne ISD Stadium.

Both teams started the night unbeaten in district, looking to keep pace with Smithson Valley atop District 12-5A. It was the Chargers who stayed even with the Rangers at 3-0 while the Mats fell a game back in the district at 2-1.

Champion took the opening kickoff and marched down the field 50 yards in four plays to score when senior quarterback Jordan Ballin found a streaking Sawyer Bolli down the middle of the field for a fifteen-yard TD strike to start the scoring. The Chargers forced a three-and-out on Seguin’s first possession and then Ballin found Campbell DeBerry on a 27-yard scoring strike to go up 14-0.

The Chargers would use an onside kick and get an interception on defense to get their offense two more scoring opportunities in the first quarter to go up 28-0 at the end of the quarter. The Mats would finally get on the scoreboard on the first play of the second quarter when quarterback Corey Dailey found Creed Weaver wide open off a flea-flicker for a 28-yard score.

Ballin threw and ran for a score later in the second quarter to put the Chargers up, 42-7. Seguin would drive down field late in the half, but would turn the ball over on a fumble deep in Champion territory in the final minute of the second quarter.

In the second half, Dailey would find Weaver and Nik Henry for a pair of passing touchdowns to close out the scoring for the Matadors. The sophomore quarterback finished the night with three touchdown passes while throwing his first interception of the season in the first half.

The Matadors fall to third place in District 12-5A with the loss. Seguin will host Hays next Friday at Matador Stadium. The Hawks are 1-2 in district after falling to Canyon on the road Friday night. Both Hays and Canyon are 1-2 in district play. Next Friday’s game between Hays and Seguin kicks off at 7:30 p.m.
