(Geronimo) — Instead of extinguishing them, Geronimo Volunteer Fire Fighters will be igniting the flames this weekend during their annual BBQ fundraiser and live auction. The event will be held this Saturday at the Geronimo Community Center.
Michael Castro, the president of the Geronimo VFD, says BBQ plates will again be served as usual.
“We are going to have our lunch like we always do from 12 to 2 p.m. there at the Community Center. It’s going to be a drive through and then dinner will be from 5 to 8 p.m. there at the Community Center as well,” said Castro.
Those who choose to stop by for dinner will be treated to live music by local band Best Friends. A live auction will also get underway at 6:30 p.m.
Castro says like most VFDs, every dollar is stretched the best way that it can be.
“We definitely see the impact of the growth for sure. It’s still a growing community as it has been for a little bit now and we are located right across the Navarro Junior High off of (State Hwy.) 123. We had a station renovation and addition that was done a year and a half ago. Last year was actually the first-full year of being in the station and now we are looking for donations and stuff for equipment that we need to update and paying off the facility and updating our fleet,” said Castro.
Most of the proceeds from this year’s barbecue, however, will go toward the renovation of the fire station’s driveway. Castro says it’s been a long time since the driveway has been repaired and says with the new building, the project has been made a priority.
Plates are $12 pre-sale or $15 at the door. The meal includes beef clod, sausage, potato salad, and green beans.
The fire department’s annual raffle will also officially kick off at this year’s event. Tickets are $20 each and include a number of prizes. The drawing is scheduled for Dec. 13.
The Geronimo Community Center is located at 260 Navarro Dr.
