(Seguin) — Go Matadors! The Seguin community is invited to help cheer on Seguin High School during tonight’s annual Homecoming Community Pep Rally at Matador Stadium.
Student Council Advisor Heather Brown says the first change that folks will notice is that the annual tradition has changed to a Wednesday.
“Coach (Craig) Dailey requested that we move it to Wednesday so all students can participate in it because when we do it on Thursday, then the JV and freshman football players and anybody with sports on Thursday can’t go participate. So that’s today. Gates are going to open at 6:30 and we will have the music of mariachi Matador, our award-winning Mariachi kicking things off right around 6:45 and then the presentation of colors will start shortly after that at 7 o’clock,” said Brown.
Brown says despite this change, all other traditions and groups will be on hand to celebrate the evening.
“The national anthem will be done by the choir, the presentation by the ROTC here on campus, the Matador Band, we have the return of Mini Mats this year who have taken some lessons with our cheer team here on campus and will be pepping everybody up and doing performances which is my personal favorite. We have Ballet Folklorico, the Star Steppers, the high school cheer, the drumline and then the volleyball and football team will be doing some speaking as well and then we will introduce our Homecoming Court that was elected by our student body and then at the very end, it’s the traditional burning of the M where we light up a giant M on the back stands,” said Brown.
This year, the student council chose to go with a Gold Out theme. Brown says the idea is to showcase the high school and community as one.
“Just think about things that were traditions in the past with the community to kind of bridge more of the high school with the community and so, one of those things that we brought back this year was the Paint the Town Gold where different clubs on campus partner with businesses to paint their windows in school spirit just to bridge that a little bit better,” said Brown.
Each day this week, students at the high school continue to celebrate with various dress days and spirit contests.
Again, stadium gates open today at 6:30 p.m. with the pep rally starting at 7:05 p.m. The Homecoming Pep Rally is free and will be held on the home side of the stadium only. This year’s festivities continue on Friday with the football game against MacArthur High School. Kick off is at 7:30 p.m. It will be followed by the homecoming dance in the SHS Patio on Saturday at 7 p.m.
