(Buda) — It took two days plus a two hour weather delay, but the Seguin Matadors and Lehman Lobos finally got their district opener in on Saturday with the Mats coming away with a 55-30 win at Bob Shelton Stadium in Buda.
The game was pushed back to Saturday morning after lightning forced a postponement on Thursday night. The Matadors jumped out to a 35-6 lead late in the second quarter on Saturday and then lightning struck again forcing a two hour weather delay.
Before the delay, the Matadors got on the board first. Offensive lineman Carter Dunn scored his first career touchdown when he recovered a Seguin fumble in the Lehman end-zone to cap off the Mats first drive of the game.
Ocean Moreno would haul in a 56-yard TD pass from quarterback Corey Dailey later in the quarter to put Seguin up 14-0. Running backs John Jackson and Devin Hall would score on three touchdown runs in the second quarter, two by Jackson and one by Hall to put the Matadors ahead 35-6 before lightning in the area delayed the game.
The Mats would get two more touchdown runs by Jackson and a 101-yard pick-six by defensive back Cameron Bruns in the second half to complete their scoring.
Jackson went over 200 yards rushing for the fourth straight game finishing with 232 yards on 25 carries. Corey Dailey was 11-19 for 155 yards and a score.
Seguin is 1-0 in District 12-5A, tied for first with Smithson Valley, Hays and Boerne Champion who all picked up wins in their district openers. Seguin will host San Antonio MacArthur on Homecoming night this Friday night at Matador Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and we’ll have the game on KWED.
