(Seguin) — The Seguin ISD has chosen a direction that it would like to go while conducting its superintendent search.
That direction includes appointing Dr. Veronica Vijil, Seguin ISD’s current deputy superintendent as the interim superintendent effective Oct. 2.
During a special meeting on Wednesday, Seguin ISD Trustees discussed its plans to officially appoint Dr. Vijil to the position during its upcoming Sept. 26 regular school board meeting.
They say trustees are prioritizing stability as Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez transitions to his new role in Leander ISD at the end of the month.
Seguin ISD Board President Alejandro Guerra stated that “Seguin ISD continues to move forward as a destination district and the goal is to maintain that momentum” as they begin the process of filling the superintendent seat with an effective, compassionate leader.
Dr. Vijil is still relatively new to the Seguin ISD having been just appointed as the deputy superintendent in July.
However, district officials say they all feel that she brings a wealth of experience to the district, having previously served as superintendent of Fabens ISD near El Paso. As a 34-year educator, she has superintendent, principal, ESL, and teaching certifications for grades 6-12.
Her previous administrative roles include superintendent, associate superintendent, executive director of data management and compliance, and middle school principal.
“I have had the privilege of working closely with Dr. Vijil for the past couple of months and am confident that she will provide excellent leadership during this transition period. She exhibits a positive, can-do attitude along with years of experience in Texas public schools. During her short time with our district she has taken initiative toward making herself an integral part of the Seguin ISD community. I know that Seguin ISD will be in good hands,” said Gutierrez.
The Sept. 26 regular school board meeting is already on the calendar for 6:30 p.m. in the Seguin ISD Board Room.
