Navarro impresses with grid-iron win over Navasota while Marion falls in high scoring affair at Hondo


(Geronimo) — The Navarro Panthers were impressive in a 34-8 win over state power Navasota in Geronimo this past Friday night.

The Panther defense limited the Rattlers to 137 total yards while forcing four turnovers. Navarro defensive back Gabe Rangel had two interceptions and defensive lineman Mack Berry had two sacks.

On offense, Navarro running back Antwoin Mebane ran for 107 yards with a pair of touchdowns in the victory. The Panthers had 105 yards through the air out of their slot-t formation with both quarterbacks Austin Davidson and Colton Schuelke tossing touchdown passes. Braddock Gallini caught a 63-yard TD pass from Schuelke.

Navarro is back home on Friday night to host Cuero. The Gobblers, a state semifinalist in 2022, beat El Campo 41-7 at home in their first game last week. Cuero won last year’s match-up with Navarro in Cuero last season.

This Friday night’s game between Navarro and Cuero kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at Erwin-Lee Field in Geronimo and we’ll have the game for you on AM 1580 KWED and streaming at SeguinToday.com.

(Hondo) — And the Marion Bulldogs fell in their opening game last Friday night, dropping a 41-31 decision to the Hondo Owls.

Quarterback Bo Stahl threw for 250 yards and two touchdowns in the defeat. Chase Hallmark caught both of Stahl’s TD passes including a 70-yard catch and run to the endzone.

Hallmark finished the game with four catches for 168 yards. Hadley Mote added five receptions for 52 yards for the Bulldogs.

Marion will travel to Natalia for their next game this coming Friday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Natalia.
