(Seguin) — Guadalupe Regional Medical Center will be doing its part this weekend to make sure families who need food, get the food they deserve. GRMC on Saturday will host its first pop-up food distribution event of the year in the back parking lot of the local hospital.
GRMC’s Elaine Bennett has worked for years to organize this event and says the food is the direct result of hospital employees who had fun during the annual GRMC Strikes Out Hunger Bowl-A-Thon.
“This distribution is really coming from our employees of GRMC. These are the funds that we raised from our annual bowl-a-thon,” said Bennett.
Not only are employees responsible for raising funds but they will also make up the bulk of volunteers at Saturday’s distribution.
Bennett says to receive food, families will want to arrive early. She says food will then be distributed between 9 and 10 a.m. or until supplies last.
“This food distribution is a little bit different. It’s a first come, first serve. It’s going to be very important to show up. We will register you on-site so you will see our volunteers working with you as you drive up. We have the route posted on our Facebook. We know it’s really hot out there so we want to keep everyone hydrated. Just as a reminder, bring an ice chest with you. Bring water for yourself in your car as you wait. The San Antonio Food Bank truck will arrive at 8 that way we can get started at 9. We will be distributing over 10,000 pounds of food within this hour. Normally during this time of year, produce is really the heavy product that is on the truck. So with that said, you want to have the appropriate cooler or something of that nature in your car. We are going to work as fast as we can to get you through the line and get you home to enjoy the food that the food bank has provided,” said Bennett.
The drive-through line will operate in the back parking lot of GRMC. Drivers are reminded to not block driveways or entry into the Walmart parking lot while waiting for food.
