Marion Lady Bulldogs rally to take down Wagner

(Marion) — Falling down two sets to none, the UIL Class 3A Marion Lady Bulldogs staged a furious rally to come back and take down the 5A Wagner Lady Thunderbirds 23-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-6 on Tuesday night at Marion High School.

“Awesome! That was what I’ve been waiting for these girls to do. Fight back and want more and not lay down,” Marion head coach Melissa Mitchell Schuetz said following the epic comeback. “Just because you got one (set), you gotta finish. You gotta close the door. I’m so proud of them right now.”

The Lady Bulldogs, down two sets to one, trailed 11-16 in the fourth set when senior setter Kacee McLendon served up seven straight points to turn the pivotal set in the Lady Bulldogs favor.

“She has a wicked serve. A wicked, wicked serve and that’s something that we work on a lot,” Mitchell Schuetz said. “We work on serving a lot and she’s just got a wicked touch on it and it’s awesome.”

Senior outside hitter Kamryn Garza lead Marion with 20 kills while senior Kylie Balderas had 12. McLendon had 32 assists on the night setting up her outside hitting teammates. Sophomore Ellie Parker added 19 assists. Junior Bristin Birdwell came up 23 digs on the back line for the Lady Bulldogs.

Marion is 9-5 on the season. The Lady Bulldogs will next compete at the Kerrville-Tivy Hill Country tournament starting on Thursday.

In other area action on the volleyball courts:

(Floresville) — The Seguin Lady Matadors fell in three sets on Tuesday night at Floresville, dropping the match 25-20, 25-9, 25-13. Seguin is 7-12 on the season. Next up for the Lady Mats is the Seguin volleyball tournament. Play starts Thursday at Seguin High School.

(Poth) –And the Navarro Lady Panthers swept past Poth on the road Tuesday night with a 25-20, 25-11, 25-22 victory. Navarro is 15-4 so far this season. The Lady Panthers will also play in the Seguin volleyball tournament starting Thursday.
