Marion Bulldogs celebrate coach Ryne Miller's birthday with strong scrimmage performance against Poth

The Marion Bulldogs scrimmage 2022 Class 3A state runner-up Poth at Veterans Stadium in Marion on August 17, 2023.

(Marion) — Maybe inspired by the birthday of their head coach, the Marion Bulldogs put together a spectacular performance on Thursday against a team that played in the state championship game last season.

The Bulldogs shut-out UIL Class 3A state runners-up Poth in the final quarter of their scrimmage in the hot Texas sun against the Pirates at Veterans Stadium. Marion head coach Ryne Miller celebrated his birthday at the practice game and he says his team has built up confidence with their performance in their two scrimmages.

“We scrimmaged two really good football teams the last two weeks in Hallettsville and Poth and Poth coming off a state championship game,” Miller said. “It’s a confidence boost we need and I just told the guys, the season hasn’t started yet tho. So, these last two weeks (…) have prepared us for our non-district and district games. These guys are gonna keep showing up every day, working hard every day and we’re excited to get the season started now.”

Senior quarterback Bo Stahl connected with senior wide-out Chase Hallmark on a 45-yard touchdown strike down the middle of the field. Hallmark made a nice move to turn around a Poth defender and Stahl hit Hallmark in stride as he waltzed into the end-zone.

On defense, sophomore Jaiden Riley had an interception to kill Poth’s final drive. The Bulldogs then used a strong running game with some great blocking up front by the Marion offensive line to run out the clock and complete a 6-0 shut-out of the Pirates in the simulated quarter.

Marion now turns their attention to the regular season, which starts one week from tonight. The Bulldogs will hit the road to take on the Hondo Owls next Friday.

(Devine) — Navarro finished up their practice game season with a scrimmage at Devine on Thursday. The Panthers will host Navasota next Friday night at Erwin-Lee Field in Geronimo.

(Seguin) — And the Seguin Matadors will host Pflugerville tonight in their final tune-up before the regular season. Seguin will take to the road next Friday at Alamo Heights to start the 2023 season. Tonight’s scrimmage starts at 7 p.m. at Matador Stadium.
