(Seguin) — The 2023 UIL volleyball season starts tonight. The Navarro Lady Panthers and the Seguin Lady Matadors will meet at Goldie Harris Gym to start the new season.
The Lady Mats are lead by second year coach Ashley Farris. Seguin is coming off a season in 2022 that saw them finish in sixth place in District 26-5A with a 20-25 overall record.
The Lady Matadors return five players for last year’s squad. The team roster comprises six seniors, four juniors, one sophomore and three freshman.
Navarro is coming off a season in which they advanced to the Class 4A Region IV Bi-District round. Farris says they are familiar with the Lady Panthers who have a lot of experience.
“We did a team camp with them in Marion the week before the start of the season. So, we got to see them. They definitely have great size. They have a lot good experience coming back,” Farris said. “We’ve been preaching about defense and being mentally tough and being proud to have ‘Seguin’ on our chest. So, I’m just looking forward to seeing what the girls do with all that advice on Monday night.”
Navarro will welcome in a new coach for the 2023 season at tonight’s match. Paige Poth takes over for Misty Remmers who lead the Lady Panthers to 18 wins and a fourth place finish in District 27-4A in 2022.
Poth comes to Geronimo from San Antonio Cole High School where she spent a year as the Lady Cougars coach. Poth was the head coach at Clifton High School before that and is also a former New Braunfels assistant.
Tonight’s match between Seguin and Navarro gets underway at 6:15 p.m. at Goldie Harris Gym on the Seguin High School campus.
The Marion Bulldog volleyball team will start their season tomorrow night in Poteet. Marion won 17 games overall in the 2022 season and advanced to the Class 3A Bi-District round under head coach Melissa Mitchell-Schuetz.
Marion and Poteet will play at 7 p.m. Tuesday night at Poteet High School.
