(Seguin) — The Seguin River Monsters took a 1-0 lead Tuesday night in their best-of-three Texas Collegiate League playoff series against the Victoria Generals at Smokey Joe Williams Field, blasting Victoria 10-3.
Adrian Torres had a home run, a double and drove in six runs on the night for the Monsters. Nyan Hayes had three hits and a stolen base from the lead off spot. And lefty Michael Quevedo picked up the win going six innings on the hill allowing only two runs, striking out five and scattering eight hits.
Navarro High School grad Jaxen Monkerud made his playoff debut in a River Monsters uniform in relief of Quevedo. The right hander tossed two innings giving up one unearned run while fanning a pair. Monkerud threw 22 of his 26 pitches for strikes in his eight appearance for Seguin this season.
Up 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth, the Monsters erupted for five runs in the the inning to take control. Alex Gonzales had an RBI single and Torres drove in two runs with a double during the outburst.
The Monsters will now go for the two-game sweep tonight in Victoria.
The other TCL playoff match-up features the Brazos Valley Bombers and the Baton Rouge Rougarou. The Bombers lead that series 1-0 after taking down Baton Rouge 5-4 in Louisiana Tuesday night. The winner of that three-game series will take on the winner of Seguin/Victoria series in the TCL Championship.
Tonight’s game two between the River Monsters and Generals takes place at Riverside Stadium in Victoria. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. and the game features free admission.
