Jury hands down 99 year sentence in deadly shooting of local teen

(Seguin) – A man is slated to spend the next 99 years behind bars for last year’s deadly shooting of a teenage girl. A Guadalupe County Jury on Wednesday sentenced Draven Rene Reyes, now 21-years-old, to 99 years for the murder of Maekalyn Ann Marie Smith on April 4, 2022 at Seguin’s Park West.

The trial which began Monday finished up early Wednesday afternoon in the courtroom of State District Judge William “Bill” Old.

Reyes was also handed down 50 years for the aggravated assault of Smith’s boyfriend, who was alongside her during the deadly attack. The boyfriend, an 18-year-old suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Reports at the time indicate Reyes was riding in a vehicle with a pair of 21-year-olds Christanio Soto and Sahra Vega, when Reyes opened fire on the couple who was sitting at the park near the basketball courts located along San Antonio Avenue.

Reyes who fled the scene went into hiding and was not apprehended until about a week later in San Antonio by the United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force.

Both Vega and Soto were apprehended during a traffic stop conducted a day after the shooting. Both were also charged with one count of murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The next court date for Soto and Vega is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 29.
