Cibolo robbery case turns into a murder investigation

All of Guadalupe County encouraged to remain vigilant

(Cibolo) — A robbery case is now a murder investigation in nearby Cibolo.

A bank jugging incident remains a top priority for Cibolo Police Detectives.

They say 61-year-old James Doty died of injuries he sustained after being attacked and robbed by an unknown person while walking to his vehicle.

The incident happened on Thursday, June 15 in the 4400 block of Green Valley Road in Cibolo.

It’s another case of jugging.

Jugging is the term used to describe a crime where someone is watching and following a person who they believe withdrew a large sum of money, who someone who they think might be traveling with large amounts of cash.

Cibolo police say based on bank video from Security Service Federal Credit Union, an unidentified black female wearing a surgical mask appears to be watching Doty conduct his banking business and then follows him out of the bank. The female then gets into a grey Chevrolet Impala that waits and follows Doty’s vehicle. The Impala seen from the bank is caught circling the parking lot when Doty stops by a business on Green Valley Road.

Police say that’s when Doty exits the business and while entering his vehicle, a newer model gray Chevrolet Trailblazer drives up and stops behind Doty’s vehicle. A black male wearing a blue hoodie and a surgical mask exits the passenger side of the suspect vehicle and approaches Doty from behind striking him to the ground. A struggle on the ground is seen between the suspect and Doty before the suspect flees back to the Chevrolet Trailblazer with a white envelope in his hand, which is believed to contain the money that Doty had earlier withdrawn.

After the suspect flees from the scene, Doty is able enter his vehicle and drive away from the scene. Cibolo detectives say there were no calls to the police department to report the incident when it happened.

That call was not made until six days later on Wednesday, June 21 when Doty apparently began acting strangely and suffered a fall.

On Thursday, June 22, officials say Doty’s symptoms began to worsen, and he was transported to a San Antonio area hospital for treatment.

While at the hospital, Doty fell into a coma and was placed on a ventilator. Doty reportedly died Wednesday, July 12.

This is yet another high-profile case of jugging in the area.

Seguin Police officials just last week announced the arrest of a couple from the Houston area, who were reportedly involved in jugging crimes here in this area. They say unfortunately, incidents of ‘bank jugging’ are on the rise across the country and they encourage residents to be aware of their surroundings, especially when withdrawing money from a banking institution.

Anyone with information on this latest jugging case should contact the Guadalupe County Crime Stoppers Hotline at 877-403-TIPS (8477).
