(Seguin) – Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen says she’s ready to roll up her sleeves and help fill up those gas tanks. Dodgen will be among the city leaders and church volunteers who will be providing one free tank of gas during Saturday’s Summer Gas Giveaway.
The event designed for families in need will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at the VP Racing Fuel Pic N Pac store location at 630 W. Court St.
The only thing drivers need to ensure is that there is at least one child present in the vehicle during pumping.
As previously reported, the gas giveaway is being made possible thanks to ReachUp Ministries in San Antonio and Sweet Home Baptist Church in Seguin.
Dodgen says she is excited to be partnering with these church communities in hopes of making a positive impact in the community.
“I think it’s a wonderful idea. That group approached us and felt that it was a calling to come to Seguin to do this. I admire that and we all wanted to honor that. One of their goals was for people to meet first responders, to meet public officials, to gather and meet other people in the public that might be in a place of decision makers and so I think that is important as well to be out there and to be available and so I thought this was a wonderful opportunity,” said Dodgen.
Dodgen says she never passes up a wonderful gift for the community and looks forward to seeing the event unfold this Saturday afternoon.
“They do it in San Antonio from my understanding and it’s very well received. I would like to do it here and then see if we can do it on a yearly basis with them. I think it’s a great idea. I know that they are limited in how much and they have some ways in which they manage who and what and how and all of those sorts of things that has worked for them in a larger city and so I just think it’s a really good thing and I think we should embrace that and when someone feels that there is a calling to do something for our city and our hometown if it’s within our purvey to do, then I think we should do it,” said Dodgen.
Also supporting the vehicles and families will be members of the Seguin Police and Seguin Fire Departments. Dodgen says Saturday’s event will truly be a team effort.
“We certainly wanted things to be safe so we called in the police to help with traffic control and then the fire to be there so that folks can get to know them and see their equipment and that sort of thing and now, I’m grateful because it’s going to be so hot that if something happens, I want someone who can respond quickly to be there. So, that’s a really good idea to have them there but they are going to have Sparky (the Fire Dog) and some other things so that folks can know their first responders and know that they are part of the community and that they are here to be a part of that community and I don’t want anyone to ever be afraid of our police or our fire or any of us who are public officials,” said Dodgen.
Event organizers say they expect to provide gas for approximately 150 vehicles.
