Seguin Art League announces summer camp, art class schedule
(Seguin) — Ever since, the Seguin Art League launched its official operation of its renovated building in downtown Seguin, it seems as though it has been rolling out a long list of art classes in which to choose from. Connecting art with the community is especially important for the art league as it announces a slate of summer camps and programming.
Roger Betschler, a member of the Seguin Art League’s show and education committees, says individuals and families are invited to check out their summer schedule.
He says there’s definitely something for everyone.
“We’ve set up four day summer camps from June through July. It’s just about something going on every week where kids, adults, whoever want to come in and take these classes and we have a couple of good instructors that will do a real fine job with anybody who wants to come in and learn something about art,” said Betschler.
Now, if there is a class that folks aren’t too sure about, then they are encouraged to learn more.
Betschler says after all, art is more than just drawing and painting.
“The summer camps are varied. I want to plug our Linocut class coming up and that’s in July. Donna Maske and I are going to do that particular class and that’s going to be a fun class but we are only taking 12-year-olds and older because we want to work with teenagers more or less. It’s an old process from way back in the 1500s where you are carving with tools, sharp tools and creating your image and then painting it and taking a print off it and what is nice about Linocuts is you can do a repetition of a lot of pieces,” said Betschler.
Oftentimes, he says skills and talents that individuals feel they lack are much of the reason of why they don’t dabble in art. However, at the Seguin Art League, Betschler says everyone walks away with a lesson.
“Even in our Lino print class, we are going to start off with some drawings and just some basic techniques on how to draw the image you want on your paper. So, you might come in limited in your drawing abilities but you will come out with a very nice product,” said Betschler.
Betschler says he’s proud of this summer’s collective classes and encourages sign-up as soon as possible.
“This summer we have morning camps and that’s for 5 to 9 years olds and the afternoon camps are 10-year-old to I think 17 is the limit on that. We have some beginning watercolor classes. We have a photography class working with your phone and the gentleman that is going to teach it is really very good. So, I hope people come out and try some of these classes,” said Betschler.
Betschler says with dreams still in its plans, the art league is currently doing exactly what it was designed to do and that is connecting people with art.
“We had a family come in last summer. They came down from Dallas and they were looking for something to do and we got them into a clay class for two days and they just had a wonderful time. But you know, it was on the spur of the moment and there just happened to be that we had room for them. I wish we were a little bit open for people coming in just for the day and going ‘Hey, what can we do?’ And, come on in and we have a class set up for them to go. That’s down the road a way yet,” said Betschler.
Cost, age limit, and class size vary for each art camp. A schedule of camps is available on the art league’s website at seguinartleague.com or Facebook page.
