(Marion) — The Marion Bulldogs fell 5-2 to Jourdanton in game one of their best-of-three UIL Class 3A Region IV Area round series on Thursday night at Marion High School.
In a 2-2 game in the top of the 7th, the Indians loaded the bases. With one out, Laz Salazar smacked a base hit down the left field line to bring in two runs to put Jourdanton ahead 4-2. Clyde Schuchart then drove in another run on a chopper to third to make the score 5-2.
The Bulldogs would load the bases with two outs in the bottom of the 7th with the potential winning run, Owen Schoenvogel at the plate. Schoenvogel would hit a long drive to left field that would be caught on the warning track to end the game.
Schoenvogel started the game on the bump for the Bulldogs going 6 and 1/3 innings and striking out 10. He would retire 13 consecutive batters from the 2nd through the 6th innings, but would be charged with the loss thanks to the Indians’ rally in the 7th.
Jaxson Garner scored both runs for the Bulldogs. Dominic Castellanos drove in Garner with a two-out base hit in the 4th inning for Marion’s second run on the game.
Game two in the series is today in Jourdanton. First pitch originally scheduled for 5 O’clock has been moved up to avoid inclement weather. The game will now start at 1 p.m. Marion will need a win to push the series to three games. If the Bulldogs take game two, game three is scheduled to take place 30 minutes after game two today.
(Hallettsville) — Navarro is also in an 0-1 hole in their best-of-three series with Sealy.
The Tigers took down the Panthers 4-3 Thursday night in game one of the Class 4A Region IV Area round match-up in Hallettsville.
Navarro trailed 4-1 in the bottom of the 7th when Gavin Newborg singled to score Blaine Pircher to bring the Panthers within two. Bryce Nall would score from third on a wild pitch to cut the lead to one, but Sealy pitcher Ethan Doyle would strike out the final two batters with a runner at second base to close out the victory for the Tigers.
