Race to Raise 5K set to start on lawn of local bookstore

Sign-up still available for annual event

(Seguin) — Sign-up is still available for this year’s 10th annual Race to Raise 5K Run and Walk hosted by the Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation. Executive Director Elaine Bennett says not only is the group excited about hosting the start and finish lines at Pecantown Books & Brews but it is also excited about welcoming one of its largest groups of participants.

“Our numbers are coming back from COVID which I think every race has suffered through that but last year, we had 149 runners and this year, we are over 200 that are registered. So, everything is going back to the pre-COVID and we are excited about that and if people still want to register, it’s not too late. You just go to athleteguild.com,” said Bennett.

The 5K will lead participants throughout the heart of the city with the route traveling through the Glen Cove subdivision. Bennett says runners and walkers will then return to Pecantown for a morning of food and music.

“We are going to have Whataburger there for the finishers along with CY distillery providing pickle shots and Pecantown Books and Brews will be providing a token to choose whatever beverage you would like at their business and we are also going to have a live band called Texas Thorns and if you’ve ever been in our rehab department and you’ve been under the care of Jim Abbott well this is his band and so we are super excited to have a live band and have one of our employees participate in providing his band so super excited about that,” said Bennett.

The event is open to both adults and children. Registration on Friday is $45 for adults and $50 on the day of the race. Registration for children is $25.

Bennett says proceeds will go toward the purchase of equipment and materials that enhance and advance the overall patient care experience at the local hospital. Plus, a portion of those proceeds will be designated to the foundation’s general endowment fund.

“Life Saver Grants are pieces of equipment or software that are unbudgeted items that come from department manager needs and it ranges anywhere from a CPR machine to blanket warmers, dolls for our SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners) Department — it just really varies and we get our ideas from the department managers. Anything that they are writing for, it will advance or enhance patient care at GRMC,” said Bennett.

Also helping to make these life-saver grants possible are the many generous donors that Bennett says have helped in hosting this event. Those unable to attend the 5K but who would still like to support the foundation are encouraged to become a “Sleep In” supporter for just $35. Those wishing to give are asked to contact the foundation at 830-401-1385 or email foundatoin@grmedcenter.com.

The 5K run/walk gets underway at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Pecantown. The business is located at 212 S. Camp St.
