Navarro Lady Panthers Fall to Cuero in District First Place Tiebreaker

The Navarro Lady Panther softball team warms up before their District 28-4A first place tiebreaker game vs. Cuero on April 24, 2023.

(Marion) — A two-out bases clearing double and a two-out three-run home run propelled the Cuero Lady Gobblers to a 10-3 victory over Navarro in tie-breaker game for the first seed in District 28-4A on Monday night in Marion.

The Lady Gobblers had the bases loaded in the top of the 5th inning with two outs and the score tied at three, when catcher Juliana Cox clubbed a double on a 3-2 pitch to bring home three runs and give Cuero a 6-3 lead. Up 7-3 with two outs in the 7th inning, Cuero would strike again for three more runs when shortstop Lainee Ballin connected on a three-run bomb to center to put the Lady Gobblers up by seven runs and effectively put the game out of reach for the Lady Panthers.

Down 2-0 in the bottom of the third, Navarro took the lead getting all their runs in the game with a three-run inning thanks to RBI’s from Samantha Mundine, Samantha Wegman and Carlie Pitner. Wegman would toe the rubber in the circle and pitch her 2nd complete game for the Lady Panthers in three days.

The two teams, who ended up tied for first at 9-1 in the district standings, met on Saturday with the Lady Gobblers getting a come-from-behind 3-2 win to force the tie-breaker game on Monday night. With Monday’s victory, Cuero earned the top seed in the district and will face Bandera, the 4th seed out of District 27-4A in the UIL Bi-District round later this week.
