City of Seguin to host free clean-up day this weekend

(Seguin) — This again is the weekend to tackle that spring cleaning. Helping residents get rid of all their unwanted junk will again be the city of Seguin. The city will be hosting a Spring Clean-Up Day on Saturday in the Seguin Coliseum parking lot.

Jennifer Sourdellia, the city of Seguin public information officer, says all residents have to do is pack up their trunks, trucks or trailers and bring proof of residency such as a photo ID or utility bill to prove they reside within the city limits.

“This is such a great service for residents that live in our Seguin city limits because this is an opportunity for them to bring unwanted items. Maybe they’ve cleaned out their garage.

Maybe they were cleaning out their houses and they want to get rid of some things but they simply just don’t know where to take them. It’s just a perfect opportunity for them to bring these items to our Spring Clean-Up Day which is free,” said Sourdellia. “All you have to do is simply load up all your items that you want to get rid of. Put them in the back of your truck. You can put them on the back of a trailer, load it up, bring it to the Seguin Coliseum. We will have volunteers there removing all these items, putting them in trash bins, getting rid of these things and items and disposing of them properly for you.”

Among the accepted items include junk disposal including mattresses, scrap metal, appliances without Freon and a maximum of 10 automobile tires no larger than 19.5 inches.

Now while most items will be accepted, there are a few items that Sourdellia says will not be collected.

“Some of these things are hazardous materials and chemicals so if you’ve got cleaning supplies at your house, pesticides, we don’t take any of those type of materials. We also do not accept brush and limbs because those items can be picked up from your homes by our trash service. We do not take any sort of construction material or debris, no fences, no sheds and no appliances with Freon. We also do not accept any tractor trailer, lawn mower, bicycle or ATV tires and we do not take tires from local businesses,” said Sourdellia.

Other items that will not be accepted include computer monitors or TVs.

Paper shredding, however, will be available. Residents are limited to two bags or two boxes filled with paper documents.

The event will be held on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. The Coliseum is located at 950 S. Austin St.  Those with questions are encouraged to call the public works department at 830-401-2416.
