(Seguin) — The playoff bound Seguin Lady Matadors used timely hitting, great pitching and superb defense to cruise past Boerne-Champion in a playoff tune-up on Senior Night at Seguin High School, taking down the Lady Chargers 8-0 on Friday night.
Senior Ryan Rangel started the scoring for the Lady Mats in the bottom of the 3rd inning with two outs by crushing a two-run home run to left field off Champion pitcher Ava Trevino. Rangel would finish her final regular season home game in Seguin going 2 for 4.
The Lady Matadors would score a run in the 4th on another two-out RBI, this time on a base hit from Cameron Rios to score Erin Johnston who singled with two outs to start the rally. Johnston would collect an RBI in a three-run 5th inning for Seguin.
In the 6th inning, Graylynn Salazar would drive in two more Seguin runs on a two-out base hit to close out the scoring for the Lady Mats, who won their 25th overall on the season and 10th in District 26-5A.
Pitchers Kendall Hurt and Madyson Schultze would combine to get the shutout. Hurt went the first four innings with Schultze going the final three. Each pitcher struck out three. Senior Ashlie Aguilar would help her pitchers out with some great defense in the field at 2nd base, including a diving catch off a soft liner up the middle in the 7th inning.
The Lady Matadors, who had already clinched a playoff berth before Friday’s game, will play Buda Hays in the UIL Bi-District round next week. The time and place of the playoff match-up is still to be determined.
In other area high school softball games:
(Universal City) — The Marion Lady Bulldogs destroyed Randolph 22-0 in Universal City on Friday night. Marion will play Columbus in the Bi-District round this Friday.
(Geronimo) — And the Navarro Lady Panthers fell 3-2 at home to Cuero on Saturday creating a tie between the teams a top the District 28-4A standings. The Lady Gobblers and Lady Panthers will now play Monday night in Marion to determine the district’s top seed. That game will take place a 7 p.m.
And on the baseball diamonds:
(New Braunfels) — The Canyon Cougars took down Seguin 12-1 on Saturday.
(Cuero) — The Navarro Panthers beat Cuero on the road, 4-1 in 8 innings.
(Universal City) — And the Marion Bulldogs wrapped up District 26-3A play with a 10-0 record by clubbing Randolph, 14-2. The victory was the 35th straight district win for Marion.
