(Seguin) — The first five batters of the ballgame for the Seguin Matadors reached base and came around to score providing all the support freshman pitcher Sam Edwards would need in a 7-3 victory over San Antonio Veterans Memorial on Friday night at Smokey Joe Williams Field.
Tim Belicik lead off the bottom of the first for Seguin with a walk. Holt Haas would follow with a single. Luis Ocano would double to bring home Belicek. The Mats would then get RBI base hits from Cooper Neumann and Seth Cevallos to score Haas and Ocano. Matthew Marek would get a hit as Neumann would come around to score and Cevallos would come home on a Gabe Molina sacrifice fly. Each of the Matadors’ first five batters in the game touched home as the Mats built a 5-0 lead after the first inning.
The Patriots would respond with three runs in the top of the second to cut the lead down to two and threatened to score more before Edwards got a strikeout and a fly-out to center to end the threat.
In the fourth inning, Veterans Memorial would load the bases with nobody out and the top of the order coming to bat. Edwards would work his way out of the jam unscathed as he struck out Patriot lead-off hitter Jalen Garibay, forced out a runner at home plate on a bunt in front of the mound from Nathan Fuentes and got Barrett Bressette to ground to shortstop Matthew Marek who stepped on second base to end the inning.
Edwards would pitch six-plus innings in picking up his second district victory. The right hander has been the winning pitcher in both of Seguin’s District 26-5A wins. Tim Belicek would strike out the final two batters of the game to seal the win for the Matadors. Seguin avenged a 10-9 loss at Veterans Memorial on Tuesday night.
The Matadors will be back at Smokey Joe this coming Tuesday to take on New Braunfels Canyon. First pitch between the Cougars and Matadors is set for 7 p.m.
