(Seguin) — A night of kids games and a movie on the big screen are what in store for the first ever Matador Family Bash; One Town, One Movie. The Seguin community is invited to mark their calendars now for the free fun event scheduled for this Thursday night at Seguin High School’s Matador Stadium.
Hosting the event is the Seguin ISD Superintendent’s Student Advisory Team which consists of students representing campuses from across the district. Coming up with the idea to host such a community and district wide event was Danielle Nyame, the chair of the superintendent’s student advisory team.
The high school sophomore says the idea was not only sparked by the Back to School Bash held at the beginning of the school year but more of a way to include everyone in a districtwide celebration.
“So in my time in these past two members, I’ve been a member of Meet in the Middle. Meet in the Middle is an organization that not only highlights special needs students but also allows inclusivity with special needs students and non-special needs students. Because of this, it really has inspired me to take a real interest in the community and also create a change. I was like wait, why don’t we do something similar but for everyone, community, little kids, grow-ups, elders, etc. Just open it up to all,” said Nyame.
Nyame says the Matador fair will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. followed by the movie from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
“The Matador Family Bash is actually a two-part event. The first part is hosting a fair. The fair is going to have various student organization groups that are not only going to highlight the student organizations that they are part of but they are also going to host games for the little kids to interact but will also highlight different parts of Seguin ISD. Then, the second half of the event is going to be showing a movie on the jumbotron. We have not hosted this — a move on the jumbotron — in forever. So we want to bring this back to hopefully start a tradition in the Seguin ISD and the Seguin community,” said Nyame.
All the games and activities during the fair will be free. Nyame says the only cost will be concessions during the movie.
“So for concessions, it’s going to be a limited menu which means we are not going to have any hamburgers, sausage wraps but we will be serving hot dogs, popcorn, pickles, drinks, candies etc. Now, you can’t bring your food onto the stadium because we barely just rebuilt the stadium. But what you can do is you can eat inside the bleachers and then come and lay down. Bring your blankets, bring your pillows, bring whatever you want to get cozy and watch the movie on the stadium. Our mail goal is just to have the Seguin ISD and the Seguin community have fun,” said Nyame.
The featured movie on Thursday will be “Rio.” The movie features a macaw named “Blu” who is captured by smugglers and who has never learned to fly but has a “happy” domesticated life in Minnesota.” It’s that time in captivity that he realizes he is not the last of his breed.
