(Austin) — Navarro senior Marco Moncada tossed a no-hitter and hit a homerun at the plate as the Navarro Panthers blasted Austin Northeast 14-0 in the opener of the Austin ISD Baseball Tournament on Thursday.
Moncada stuck out six and only walked one throwing 34 of his 49 pitches for strikes in getting the no-no. The senior hit an inside the park home run to lead off the game in the top of the first on a liner to right. The Panthers would jump on Northeast for eight runs in the inning as Blaine Pircher, Cole Zimmer, Caleb Wood and Austin Davidson also drove in runs for Navarro in the big inning.
The Panthers would score a run in the 2nd inning and tack on five more in the 3rd to round out their scoring. Bryce Nall also hit an inside the park homer for Navarro to lead off the 3rd.
Nall would complete the second shutout on the mound for the Panthers in their second game as Navarro beat Hyde Park in the afternoon, 7-0. Nall allowed just 3 hits and struck out 9 in the complete game shut out.
Cole Zimmer went 1 for 2 with a double. Blaine Pircher had 3 RBI. Matt Villanueva went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBI. And Landun Taylor had a triple in the Panthers’ win. The defense also turned three double plays. The Panthers are back in action today at the Austin ISD tournament.
(Seguin) — Over at the Seguin Softball Tournament, the Lady Matadors fell in their two games to Harlingen and Schertz Clemens. Harlingen beat the Lady Mats 11-3 on Thursday afternoon. Cameryn Rios went 2 for 2 with a double and a run scored to lead Seguin. Ryan Rangel drove in Rios with an RBI double in the 1st inning. Harlingen clubbed three home runs in the victory.
Seguin dropped a 9-2 decision to Clemens in their second game of the tournament. Chloe Belicek went 1 for 2 with an RBI for the Lady Mats in their second game. Rangel went 2 for 3 with a home run. Seguin has two games today at 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. at the Huber Ranch softball fields.
(San Antonio) — The Seguin Matador baseball team split a pair of games Thursday at the Southwest High School tournament, beating the host Dragons 10-7 in their first game and falling to the El Paso Tigers in their second game, 4-2. The Mats continue play at Southwest High School tourney today.
(Blanco) — And the Marion Lady Bulldog softball team fell in their two opening games of the Blanco tournament on Thursday with Pieper knocking off the Lady Bulldogs in their first game, 5-0 and Lytle getting a 10-2 win over Marion in the Lady Bulldogs’ second game. Marion will be back in action at the Blanco tournament today.
(Lytle) — And there’s one more area game on the diamond today. The Marion baseball team is at Lytle this evening. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
