(Seguin) — On his 19th birthday, Seguin High School senior Devin Matthews put his name down on paper to play football on the next level.
The school’s all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards, receiving touchdowns and all-purpose yards, Matthews will be taking his talents to Texas A&M-Commerce this fall. The All-State returner and District 12-5A MVP in 2022 made his commitment during a National Letter of Intent signing day at the school on Thursday morning.
“It means a lot.” Matthews said. “I’ve been dreaming about signing anywhere my whole life and I finally got to do it today, so it’s a blessing.”
Matthews plans to study sports management while attending A&M-Commerce. He has aspirations to play on the pro level and says he would like to get into coaching following his playing days.
Seguin Athletic Director and head football coach Craig Dailey called Matthews one of the most electric players he’s ever seen in 20 years of coaching.
“He’s in the top three categories of receptions, yards and TD’s of anybody I’ve ever coached. ” Dailey said. “You don’t really notice that during the season. And you’re like this guy played at A&M and this guy played U of H (University of Houston). And he’s up there with all those guys and you don’t realize until after the season how special of a player he is.”
Texas A&M-Commerce is lead by head coach Clint Dolezel. The Lions went 5-6 last season and finished tied for 4th place in their conference with a 3-3 record.
Devin Matthews lead the Seguin Matadors this past season with 2,132 all purpose yards. He hauled in 13 receiving scores and had five touchdowns on kickoff returns and one TD on a punt return. He had two rushing touchdowns including a 71 yard walk off score against Hays in the Matadors 6th win of the season.
Two other Matadors also made commitments at the signing day at Seguin High School this morning.
Hayden Ross signed his commitment to play football at Southwestern University in Georgetown.
And Jakob McLeod signed a letter of intent to play football at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor in Belton.
