Steak, fish dinners served every First Friday at Big Red Barn

Local service group reminds locals of the dining option

(Seguin) – As you go through your dining options tonight, you don’t want to forget to add First Friday Feast to that list. Over the years, the first Friday of every month has been earmarked as the best day to snag the best steak dinner in town. That’s all thanks to the Geronimo Lions Club which for years has been serving the steak dinner at the Texas Agricultural and Education Center better known in the community as the  Big Red Barn.

Club member Jim Lievens says there’s never been a better plan to raise money all year long.

“Mary Reiley, Mary was one of the founders and it may have been her original idea to come up with the First Friday Feast and I just think it’s ingenious. We are a very small club. You know service clubs in general have dwindling membership. We are a very small club so the only way we can run a big fundraiser like this is if we partner with others. So, the ingenious aspect of it is that we invite a co-beneficiary basically every single month. So, for instance, this month it is Our Lady of Guadalupe Food Pantry and they come out and they provide the manpower to serve the meal and they also bring desserts which is part of the meal,” said Lievens.

Lievens says those who invest in the fundraiser all come out on top. He says either they walk away with some much needed funds or they walk away with a delicious meal.

“So, it’s a win, win all around. It’s a service club. We provide a social activity for the community, another dining option. We also raise some money for ourselves so we can contribute and give back to the community and we benefit greatly, I believe, with these co-beneficiaries. So, it was just ingenious how it was put together,” said Lievens.

Of course, just as important is the food. Lievens says folks will not be disappointed and appreciates all those who have become regulars.

“The food is top notch. We buy and cut our own steak. It’s fresh. We have steak. We have baked potato. We have salad – always a dessert and Texas Toast. Can’t miss that. That’s a favorite of mine as well and the option for those who don’t care for red meat is we have really good baked fish. I think it’s Atlantic Cod. So, it’s a real good dinner option for folks,” said Lievens.

Although the club was forced to raise the price of the meal, Lievens says the dinner still remains one of the best deals in town. Plus, the event offers live entertainment.

“Sadly, as we’ve all seen with the price of eggs these days, the way the price of food keeps going up, we’ve had to raise it recently and it’s now $20 but I would still say, you go find me a steak dinner somewhere at any local restaurant for 20 bucks and that’s going to be hard to find.

Your dinner also comes by the way – your choice of an adult beverage, a beer or wine and we also have tea and water,” said Lievens.

The Geronimo Lions will have its First Friday Feast Fish or Steak Dinner today from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Big Red Barn. Meals are $20. A child’s hot dog plate is also available for $5. Tickets can be purchased at the door. Tonight’s entertainment will be provided by Chuck Reininger.
