District season is heading down the final stretch on the high school basketball courts.
(San Antonio) — The Seguin Matadors fell on the road in San Antonio Thursday night to Veterans Memorial, 71-57. The Mats were paced by Devin Matthews who had 19 points. John Jackson had 16 and Kevon Williams added 14 points.
The loss drops Seguin to 4-6 in District 26-5A play with four games left to play. They are a game and a half out of the 4th and final playoff spot in the district.
The Matadors will be back on the court tonight, this time at home at Goldie Harris Gym to host the New Braunfels Canyon Cougars. (Seguin) — The Lady Matadors beat Veterans Memorial 42-22 in front of the home crowd at Seguin High School on Thursday night. Jazmine Missildine lead the Lady Mats in scoring with 11 points while Regan Schmidt dropped in 10 points.
The win was Seguin’s 2nd in district on the season and 10th overall. The Lady Mats are on the road tonight at New Braunfels Canyon. The game tips off at 6:30 p.m.
(Geronimo) — Over in Geronimo, the Navarro Panther boys fell at home to Boerne 82-28 Thursday night in a District 27-4A match-up. Navarro is at Wimberley tonight. The game will tip at 6:30 p.m.
(Boerne) — On the girls side last night for Navarro, the Running Lady Panthers dropped a 50-28 decision at Class 4A 2nd ranked Boerne. The Runnin’ Lady Panthers remain in 3rd place in the district with a record of 7-4.
Tatum Harborth had 14 points to lead Navarro. The Lady Panthers host Wimberley tonight with a 6:15 p.m. tip at Navarro High School.
(Marion) — The Marion Bulldog boys team got a huge District 26-3A win at home over Randolph on Thursday night, coming from behind to knock off the Ro-Hawks 39-33. The win moves the Bulldogs into 4th place in the district standings.
Marion trailed Randolph 24-22 going into the 4th quarter but the Bulldogs exploded for 17 points in the final period, outscoring the Ro-Hawks by eight in the game’s final eight minutes to get the victory. Richard Rayos led the way for Marion with 19 points. Aiden Batey poured in nine points and Dominic Castellanos had some key assists in that 4th quarter to lead the comeback.
“They’ve been our leaders all year long and they stepped up when they needed to.” Marion head coach Jon Allen said of his players. “This (was) a big game for Richard. He hadn’t had a good scoring game in quite a while and this was a good coming out party for him. So, this hopefully carries us on for the next few games. I was proud of the effort by the whole team.”
With Luling losing at Nixon-Smiley on Thursday night, the Bulldogs moved one game ahead of the Eagles for the final playoff spot in the district standings with 4 games left to play. Luling beat the Bulldogs last month. The teams will rematch this coming Tuesday in Marion. The Bulldogs will next play at district leader San Antonio Cole on Saturday afternoon.
(Marion) — The Marion Lady Bulldogs fell at home to Randolph last night, 49-29. Randolph started the game on an 11-0 run and kept the lead wire to wire in the victory.
Sarah Cook had 11 points, all in the 3rd quarter to lead the Lady Bulldogs. Marion and Randolph are tied for 2nd place in the district at 6-2 with two games left in the season. The teams split their season series. The Lady Bulldogs are at Cole tonight. The game tips at 6:30 p.m.
