(Seguin) — This weekend’s Saturday Topic program on radio station KWED features a look at two big events that are on the schedule for next month.
The Seguin Education Foundation is preparing its annual Fat Tuesday celebration, while the Seguin Sunrise Rotary Club is making plans for its Sweethearts Scholarship Dinner & Dance.
The Fat Tuesday event has been Seguin’s official Mardi Gras celebration for the last few years. Seguin Education Foundation Executive Director Kelly Follis and board members Debbie Magin and Steve Parker will join the program for a look at this year’s event. Follis says the Mardi Gras Gala is set for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, February 23 in the Coliseum, and she says they will again have great food and fun available that night.
“It’s going to be a little different this year. We’re going to have some live music. (A few members of the Dirty River Jazz Band are) going to share some jazz music with us. We also have something called the Golden Ticket (raffle), and you can buy that online. You don’t have to be present to win, although it’d be a lot more fun if you were. And it’s $100. Will sell 100 tickets and you can win your choice of four trips, Puerto Vallarta, Cabo, Las Vegas, and Tuscany,” said Follis.
The Seguin Sunrise Rotary Club’s dinner and dance runs from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, February 11 at the Big Red Barn. Rotarians Dennis Clarkson and Xavier Norton will join the program for a full look at their plans for this year’s Sweetheart party, which includes live music, dinner and an auction. Clarkson says the money raised will help to support their scholarship program.
“That’s the thing that’s makes this very unique. We have two scholarships going on. We have merit scholarships, but we also have the Dream Scholars and what that is something that we came up with years ago. It’s a scholarship that goes to a freshman. Yes, that’s what I said. — a freshman in high school. People think we’re crazy, but the reason we did that was to keep those kids in school (and) to graduate from high school. That was the whole intent,” said Clarkson.
