(Seguin) — A Seguin Police Officer is being applauded for saving a man’s life early Sunday morning.
Sarah Wallace, community engagement officer for the Seguin PD, says it was just after 2 a.m. Sunday, when Patrol Officer Justin Morin observed a motorcyclist being struck by a semi-truck while patrolling an area in the 2500 block of N. State Highway 123 Bypass.
She says Officer Morin “acted quickly by not only blocking traffic to prevent further injury to the motorcyclist” but he grabbed his first aid SABA kit (Self Aid Buddy Aid) which included a tourniquet and began treating the 52-year-old male victim’s left leg which was severely injured in the crash.
She says the motorcyclist was then airlifted to a San Antonio hospital in critical condition. Wallace says the San Antonio doctors stated that “had it not been for the placing of a tourniquet, the motorcyclist would not have made it.”
“They said his fast action to apply the tourniquet and proper placement of the tourniquet, which is also, of course, really important helped to save the gentlemen’s life and helped stopped the bleeding in this instance,” said Wallace.
Wallace says the department is extremely proud of Officer’s Morin’s ability to respond quickly.
“I would just say that the department and as a co-worker, we are all very proud of him. He is an officer that represents everything that Seguin PD is about. He is just a great person and character, a hard worker and a really positive person and we are super proud of his actions that night,” said Wallace.
Wallace says the positive outcome that night just shows how training and experience are vital to the job.
“It’s always tragic that this happened but we are glad that Officer Morin was nearby and able to act quickly to help save this gentleman’s life. I know as a officer, when you can see your training and everything coming full circle, it’s always nice to know that in such an emergency that you can help save someone’s life and help an injured person like the way Officer Morin did,” said Wallace.
Seguin Fire/EMS are also being applauded for arriving on scene and providing further care for the male victim from Seguin. The man, who has been identified as Mike Buddenhagen, remains in stable condition.
