Matador Boys Fall to 6th Ranked Boerne Champion

The Seguin JV basketball team competes against Boerne Champion prior to the varsity game.

(Seguin) — The Boerne Champion Chargers lead from start to finish in a 57-38 victory over the Seguin Matadors at Goldie Harris Gym on Friday night.

Champion, the No. 6 team in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Class 5A poll, jumped out to a 15-0 lead to start the game and never trailed as they improved to 5-0 in District 26-5A and 23-1 overall on the season.

After falling behind 20-7 in the game’s first eight minutes, the Matadors put the clamps down defensively on the Chargers in the 2nd quarter. Champion only scored 2 points in the 2nd period as Seguin cut the lead down to five at the half, 22-17.

Seguin’s 17 points in the first half were split between just two Matadors. Senior Kevon Williams had nine and junior John Jackson had eight as the rest of the Mats were kept off the scoreboard by the Charger defense.

The Chargers came out early from the locker room at halftime to work on their shots and the strategy worked as they doubled their output in the 3rd quarter scoring 22 points to extend their lead to 44-30. Senior Braden Baum got hot from deep as he drilled four 3-point shots in the quarter finishing with 14 points in the period.

Not to be outdone, Seguin senior Jakyari Matthews nearly matched Baum with 10 points in the 3rd as he canned a pair of treys for the Matadors.

The Mats would get no closer as the Chargers outscored Seguin 13-8 in the final quarter. Williams scored all eight points for the Matadors in the 4th to finish the game with a team high 17.

Seguin falls to 1-4 in the district with the loss and will be back at home at Goldie Harris on Tuesday to host the Pieper Warriors.
