(Seguin) — The Seguin Matadors cut a 15 point deficit entering the 4th quarter down to 4 points, but could not complete the comeback in a 67-56 district loss at home to San Antonio Veterans Memorial on Friday night.
The Patriots took a 29-23 lead into the locker room at the half and got off to a strong start in the 3rd quarter pushing their lead into double digits and eventually up to 19 points at one point before entering the final 8 minutes with a 47-32 lead.
The Mats would respond with a 24-13 run through the first six minutes of the 4th quarter to cut the lead to 60-56, but would get no closer as Veterans Memorial would clamp down on Seguin defensively finishing the contest by scoring the game’s final seven points.
Following two close losses on the road to open district play in the last week to Kerrville Tivy and San Antonio Wagner, the Matadors are now 0-3 in District 26-5A play.
“The message to them in the locker room was just go back to work tomorrow. We’ll come in Saturday and watch some film and try to fix some mistakes and correct some defensive lapses we had and try to execute a little better offensively.” Said Seguin head coach Guy Nowlin said. “I tell the guys when you lose it’s not always as bad as you think, and when you win it’s never as good as you think. Yeah we’re 0-3, but we could be 3-0 very easily too. So I just want them to keep their heads up.”
Junior John Jackson lead the Matadors in scoring with 24 points. Senior Kevon Williams added 13 and senior Jakyari Matthews had 10 points. Seguin returns to the road for their next district game in New Braunfels against the Canyon Cougars on Tuesday night.
(San Antonio) — Over on the girls side Friday night, the Lady Matadors were a winner in San Antonio over Veterans Memorial winning big 50-24 for their first district win. Jazmine Missildine had 25 points and Regan Schmidt added 11 to lead the Seguin attack. The Lady Mats host Canyon Tuesday night.
(Geronimo) — The Navarro Lady Panthers fell at home to Boerne Friday, 50-26 in District 27-4A play. Sisters Tatum and Tegan Harborth lead the Lady Panthers in scoring with 10 and six points, respectively. Navarro gets back to district play at Wimberly on Tuesday night.
(Boerne) — The Navarro boys came up short in Boerne Friday, dropping a 69-37 decision. The Panthers host the Wimberly Texans Tuesday night in Geronimo.
(Universal City) — And the Marion boys and girls teams split a pair of games Friday in Universal City. The girls beat District 26-3A foe Randolph 47-43 while the boys fell to the Ro-Hawks 50-34. Both Marion teams will host San Antonio Cole in district play on Tuesday night.
