There was lots of hoops action on the high school courts last night:
(San Antonio) — The Seguin boys held off San Antonio Southwest on the road 62-58. Junior John Jackson who recently went over 1000 points in his career, paced the Matadors with 26 points. Seniors Isaac Garcia and Jakyari Matthews had 11 and 10 points respectively. The Mats are 11-3 overall on the season and will be back home at Goldie Harris Gym on Friday night to take on Harlandale.
(Seguin) — The Seguin Lady Matadors fell at home Tuesday night to Pieper 37-34 in their District 26-5A opener. The game went back and forth with the Warriors overcoming a seven point deficit in the fourth quarter to get the victory. Jazmine Missildine lead the Lady Mat attack with 13 points. The Seguin girls will take on Smithson Valley on the road Friday night.
Turning to Navarro Basketball results:
(Gonzales) — The Navarro boys got a win in Gonzales on Tuesday night dropping the Apaches 58-50. The Panthers are at Davenport on Friday.
(Geronimo) — Meanwhile, the Runnin’ Lady Panthers got off to 1-0 start in District 27-4A play winning their 20th game overall on the season with a 54-22 romp over Canyon Lake. Navarro scored the first 11 points of the game and never trailed, taking a 36-13 lead into the locker room at halftime. Senior Tatum Harborth had 16 points at the break and finished the game with 22. Senior Ryanne Hepp chipped in with 11 on the night.
The Hawks turned the screws on the Lady Panthers defensively in the third quarter limiting Navarro to just 3 points, but the Lady Panthers rebounded with 15 points in the fourth quarter.
After the game, Navarro head coach Darrell Harborth said his team struggled to find their way in that 3rd quarter, but he was happy to get the win in their first district game.
“We just got a little sloppy in the third quarter. I don’t think we were real focused. We did miss a few decent shots that we need to knock down. So, we just got to do a better job of staying focused for four quarters but to get a ‘w’ in the first district game is a big thing.”
Navarro will next play at the defending regional champion Fredericksburg on Friday.
Over at Marion High School last night:
(Marion) — The Marion Bulldog boys team fell at home to San Antonio Southside 58-44. The Bulldogs were lead on the stat sheet by senior Dominic Castellanos who had 19 points. Junior Walker Lindemann also scored in double figures with 10. Marion hosts the Fredericksburg boys on Friday night.
(Nixon) — And the Marion Lady Bulldogs got a win in their District 26-3A opener squeaking by Nixon-Smiley 44-42 on the road. The Lady Bulldogs return home on Friday afternoon to take on Great Hearts Northern Oaks.
