Seguin Softballer Ryan Rangel to Continue Career at St. Edward's

(Seguin) — Before the start of her senior year, Seguin softball player Ryan Rangel toured Europe playing in the American Based Sports Abroad World United Games and now when she is done with her senior year, she’ll play in Austin for St. Edward’s University.

On Wednesday, Rangel signed a Letter of Intent to play for the Hilltoppers at the NCAA Division II level.

The Matador 1st baseman and catcher will join St. Edward’s assistant coach Shelby Janda as a fellow Seguin alum for the Hilltopper softball program. Janda is a 2015 graduate of Seguin High School and was a four-year starter at St. Edward’s.

Seguin Softball head coach John Garcia, who coached both Rangel and Janda, calls Rangel a great leader and he says the Hilltopper program is excited to add Rangel after speaking with Janda.

“We’ve talked and they’re excited. They like her stick. They like they way she hits the ball. They love her power. So, she’s gonna add some offense to that program.”

Rangel has stayed busy since the 2022 softball season. She was named to the Academic All-State Volleyball team for the Lady Matadors this fall. She competed this summer in Germany, Italy and Austria playing softball at the World United Games. Rangel was grateful to play in Europe.

“It was a very great experience. I would have never thought that I would be able to go across seas to play before.” Rangel said. “It’s a very different culture over there, very beautiful scenery. It was really nice to be over there. My family did a lot for me to get over there.”

Rangel credited her family and friends for her opportunity to play on the collegiate level. She plans to study criminal justice with a minor in psychology at St. Edward’s and has aspirations to be a lawyer.

The St. Edward’s Hilltoppers compete in the Lone Star Conference and are lead by head coach Leah Glasgow.
