Devin Matthews Earns District 12-5A MVP to Lead Matador All-District Selections

(Seguin) – Seguin Matador senior wide-out Devin Matthews was voted the District 12-5A MVP and freshman quarterback Corey Dailey was named Offensive Newcomer of the Year to lead the way as several Matadors were recognized on the All-District football teams.

Matthews earned the overall District MVP after sharing the Offensive MVP award last year. The senior was also named unanimous First Team All-District receiver and First Team returner. Matthews lead the Matadors with 2,132 all purpose yards with 13 receiving touchdowns, five scores on kickoff returns, one on a punt return and two rushing touchdowns including a 71 yard walk off score against Hays in the Matadors 6th win of the season.

Seguin’s other First Team All-District selections include senior linebacker Hayden Ross and junior defensive tackle Evrin Contreras.

Named to the Second Team for the Matadors were senior linebacker Brychan Dilworth, junior running back John Jackson, senior receiver Isaac Garcia, junior tight end Jackson Pond and junior offensive lineman Cooper Neumann.

All-District Honorable Mentions for Seguin include Dailey, fullback Holt Haas, center Dane Jacobus, guard Brayan Marin, safeties Ian Moreno and Donovan Cray along with linebacker Gavin Gil.

25 Matadors were selected Academic All District. Those selections were Brock Anderson, Luke Anderson, Caleb Burns, Seth Cevallos, Contreras, Dailey, Aiden Dilworth, Brychan Dilworth, Haas, Nik Henry, Jacobus, Jordan Johnson, Conner Kopplin, Jake Mahaffey, Marin, Matthews, Zack Mica, Ian Moreno, Ocean Moreno, Neumann, Ethan Rhea, Ross, Justin Stalnaker, Landon Trost and Creed Weaver.

Seguin finished fourth in District 12-5A-Division I under second year head coach Craig Dailey. The Matadors qualified for the UIL playoffs for the 5th straight season, extending a program record.
